Drum carder standard 54TPI handle

What drum carder do I need?

When choosing the right drum carder, there are a few important factors to consider: the size of the bat you want to make, the speed at which you want to work, and the type of wool or fiber you want to card. In this article, we will help you make the right choice.

1. Width

The width of the drum determines how big your bat will be. You can choose from a drum carder 190 mm or 300 mm wide. All models are available in both widths. Other widths are available upon request.

190 mm wide
With this size you make a bat of about 19 × 60 cm. You can already card a good amount of wool in one go with this, while the drum carder remains compact and light.

300 mm width
With the 300 mm version you can make a batt of approximately 30 × 60 cm. This is useful if you want to make larger batts, for example for felting cushions, or when blending dyed wool and different fibres.

2. Type of drum carder.

We have several types of drum carder available: the standard drum carder with two drums, the triple drum carder with an additional drum and an electric drum carder.

Whichever model you choose, with all drum carders you will get well carded wool. All models are available in a width of 190 mm or 300 mm and with 54, 72 or 120 TPI carding cloth.

Standard Drum Carder

The standard drum carder is our basic model and an affordable drum carder. This model is suitable for those who regularly process small to medium amounts of fiber and are looking for a compact, reliable drum carder.

Triple drum carder
For those who want to work faster, the triple drum carder is a good choice. This model has three card drums instead of two. The extra drum helps open and process fibres more quickly, allowing you to card larger amounts of wool in less time.

Electric Drum Carder
The electric drum carder is powered by a motor. You can continuously pick apart and feed wool without turning the crank yourself. This allows you to work faster, for longer periods, and with less effort. This model is especially suitable for users who regularly process larger quantities of fibres.

3. Type of wool / fibres

The needle density of the carding cloth is expressed in teeth per inch (TPI) and determines which fibers can best be processed.

72 TPI is suitable for most types of wool and is therefore the best all-round choice. For fine fibres choose 120 TPI, for coarse fibres 54 TPI.
